Good afternoon, I'm Naamua Delaney at the CNN Center in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Pope Benedict XVI spoke at the United Nations this afternoon. He addressed the General Assembly in French and then English, speaking about religious freedom and aid to developing countries. ThePope also named respect for human rights asthe solution for many of the world's problems. Later he will visit a Manhattan synagogue.
The US military is warning Iraqis that Al-Qaeda in Iraq is planning suicide attacks in Baghdad in the near future. Information collected by coalition forces says numerous Al-Qaeda terrorists have entered the Baghdad area with the purpose of carrying out attacks in central Baghdad. Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition Forces are distributingpamphlets describing signs that may indicate terrorist activity.
Citygroup is slimming down. The big bank is eliminating another 9,000 jobsafter first quarter losses added up to more than 5 billion dollars. That follows a 10-billion-dollar loss in the fourth quarter of last year. So far, more than 13,000 workersof Citygroup have been laid off.
In Texas, custody hearings continued for 416 children taken from a polygamist sect. A Child Protection Supervisor tookthe stand for a second day today as part of the hearing. Yesterday, one child welfare worker tookthe stand and told a Texas judge, girls at the polygamist ranch may have got pregnant there when they were just 13.
There is no major damage, and apparently no one was hurt after a 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook the Midwest this morning. The quake was centered near the Illinois-Indiana state line, and wasfelt asfar away as Alabama and Michigan. Chicago police say they got hundreds of 911 calls. Debris scattered across some roads is causing headaches for drivers.
