The capital was aflutter this afternoon with rumors - apparently false - of a bomb on a bus.
周三下午，北京城因公交车有炸弹的传言而被焦虑的气氛所包围－－显然都是些虚假的传言。
Around 2:30 p.m. a Chinese blogger reported an explosion on a No. 10 bus near Chang'an Avenue, a main road that runs by Tiananmen Square. According to eyewitnesses the blogger spoke to, it looked like the rear engine had blown out, but the fire was contained, no one appeared hurt and traffic soon returned to normal. The blogger praised the rapid emergency response and didn't speculate as to the cause or mention the b-word.
在下午2:30左右，一名中文博客作者透露，北京一辆10路公共汽车在长安街附近发生爆炸。据和博客作者进行交谈的目击者称，看起来是后发动机爆炸，但是火势已经被控制，没有人员伤亡，交通很快就恢复了正常。博客作者赞扬了快速的应急措施，并没有揣测事故的原因，也没有提到任何涉及炸弹的字眼。
The news quickly spread via Twitter, and officials didn't provide any immediate answers about what had happened, heightening the pre-Games anxiety over potential terrorist attacks.

In a subsequent post, the author explained that the sudden flurry of hits (over 800 within two hours) and the world-wideattention had been frightening. 'I don’t want to be famous for this,' the blogger wrote.

It's still not clear exactly what happened to the bus today.
An official at the department that runs the No. 10 bus line said after visiting the site that a heat-sensitive fire extinguisher at the back of the bus had spontaneously combusted because the temperatures had been too high. 'It is a normal mechanical failure,' he said, noting that the bus was fairly new and had only been in service for about 6 weeks.

But Zhang Jingchun, a spokesman for the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau said there was oil leak in the ignition, which had caught fire, and he denied that there had been an explosion.
